 Setting up ShadowProtect VirtualBoot

1. Find your ShadowProtect image that you want to boot into.

2. Right click on the ShadowProtect image (either full image or incremental) and choose VirtualBoot. Select the bootable image (C:\), and follow the setup wizard.

3. Specify the operating system for the virtual machine, this should be the same operating system used by the computer with the ShadowProtect backup image. The amount of RAM should be at least 1024MB. Click Next. It will load the settings and configurations and all the necessary drivers from the ShadowProtect image. Once it has finished, it will automatically start your virtual machine.

Note: The virtual machine will share the RAM usage you have specified, please make sure that you have enough RAM on your host computer to continuously use the virtual machine. Otherwise, if the host computer has not enough RAM to share, both virtual machine and the host computer will not function as properly intended.

Possible error

You may encounter this error when creating your virtual machine.

You need to mount and take ownership of the image. To do this:
• Right click on the ShadowProtect image and choose Mount (M). Check the “Allow Writes” box

Note: Use the Mount not quick mount option.

• Click on the Owner Tab, Select your current User Account from the list. Select “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects”.

• Save the changes made when dismounting, select to save changes to incremental file in the dismount wizard. This will create a new incremental backup image.

• Go back to step 1 and use this new image.

Configure your Virtual Machine
Network Adapter
1. Shutdown your virtual machine. On VirtualBox, right click on the virtual machine name located on the left panel. Click Settings and go to Network.

2. On the Attached to: option, choose Bridged Adapter. This will allow you to use the network settings on your current computer. If your current computer is already in the network, this will automatically connect to the network.

Network Settings
1. Turn on your virtual machine.

2. On your virtual machine, open Control Panel and click “View network status and tasks” under Network and Internet.

3. Change the network connection of your virtual machine. Click on Ethernet.

Your virtual machine should have the same IP, Gateway and DNS with the computer that had the backup image. This allows other computers in the network to automatically connect to your new virtual machine and treat it like it was the broken computer.

Continue Incremental Backups from Virtual Machine
1. From your Virtual Machine, open your ShadowProtect console and select Destinations tab. In the Destinations tab, select the destination object used to store the VM’s source backup image files, then click Edit.

Note: Do not delete the destination object or you will break the backup image chain. Rather, modify the destination object as needed to point to the current location of the backup image files used to create the VM.

2. In the Destination dialog box, modify the Destination Path to point to the location of the backup image files used to create the VM. Click OK when done.

Note: You might need to modify the network credentials (Domain, User, Password) in the destination object to access the backup image files in their new location.

3. Go back to ShadowProtect main page and select Backup tab. Select the appropriate backup job, then click Execute. ShadowProtect starts a new incremental backup in the existing chain.

Recover Backup to New Computer
The virtual machine is a temporary replacement for the broken computer. You will need to provide a new computer.

1. Setup and configure the new computer with the same computer name and other settings from the broken computer. Install the ShadowProtect CD.

2. On your ShadowProtect console. Choose Restore, browse the latest backup image created from the temporary virtual machine and follow the setup wizard.

3. When the new computer is up and running, turn off your virtual machine.

4. Again to continue your incremental backup from the new computer, follow the steps in Continue Incremental Backups. Do it from your new computer instead of your virtual computer.

5. Restart your new computer.
