Using ESET SysRescue to create a bootable USB disk, CD or DVD

Select one of the choices below to view instructions for your operating system:

Windows XP/ Windows Server 2003 R2

    1. Verify that you are using a 32-bit operating system. If you are using a 64-bit operating system, follow the instructions from the article below.
    2. Upgrade your ESET product to the latest version.

Windows XP users

Download the Image Mastering API v2.0 for Windows XP. It is important that you install the Image Mastering API before you install WAIK.

  1. Download the Microsoft Windows Automated installation kit (WAIK).
    1. Click Continue from the Microsoft Knowledgebase web page to begin the download. Note that the WAIK download requires 1.3GB of hard drive space. The WAIK download comes in ISO or IMG format. To read these file formats, you must use an ISO reader program.
  2. Open the ISO or IMG file you downloaded from Microsoft and run StartCD.exe to install WAIK.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Proceed to the Create a SysRescue CD, DVD or USB disk section.

Windows 8/ 7/ Vista (SP2)/Windows Server 2008 or later

  1. Verify that you are using a 32-bit operating system. If you are using a 64-bit operating system, follow the instructions from the article below.
  2. Upgrade your ESET product to the latest version. 
  3. Download the Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK).
    1. Click Save File when prompted and save the file to your Desktop. While the initial ADK.exe file is a small download, the installer will download additional material that requires 1.7GB of hard drive space.
  4. Once the download completes, double-click the .exe file you just downloaded to install ADK.
  5. After installing ADK, restart your computer.
  6. Proceed to the Create a SysRescue CD, DVD or USB disk section.
Create a SysRescue CD, DVD or USB disk
  1. Open ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus. How do I open my ESET product?
  2. Click Tools  ESET SysRescue. If prompted to continue, click Yes.

  1. Click Next.

  1. Select your desired SysRescue target media. In this example, we will create a USB. Make sure a USB device is connected, select USB and then click Next.

  1. Click Change.

  1. In the ISO properties window, click the ESET Antivirus tab. Under Nup files location, select ESS/EAV folder to use the virus signature database from your installation of ESET Smart Security/ESET NOD32 Antivirus. Click OK.

  1. Click Create to create the SysRescue USB.

  2. After a few minutes, the SysRecue USB will be created and a confirmation window will display. When the process is complete, click Finish.
  3. Remove the USB disk and store it in a safe place. If your system is ever compromised by malware or for any other reason, you can restore it to the state it was in at the time you created this disk by booting from the USB and following the on-screen instructions. If you frequently save sensitive data to your system, you may want to create new SysRescue disks on regular intervals to minimize the amount of data lost if you need to use SysRescue.
